In my blog, have always spoken about brighter, happier side of life.Well, what about the other side?

When I take the following names, take a moment to remember them and try to picture them in your mind. Why? read to know!

Hollywood- The Joker, Catherine Tramell in Basic Instinct, Agent Smith in the Matrix, The Predator in the movie Predator, Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz and of course Alan Rickman and Harvey Dent.

Heath Ledger (The Joker)
Kevin Hall (The Predator)
Sharon Stone (Catherine Tramell)

Television- I’ll just name one very prominent – the ‘Dexter’ series starring Michael Hall.

Back home in Bollywood- The iconic characters of Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), Mogambo (Amrish Puri) to the bad men of all time, Pran, Prem Chopra, Lalita Pawar and Shakti Kapoor to Nana Patekar, Aushtosh Rana to Shahrukh Khan in Darr, Baazigar, Don to John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan (Dhoom Series)
Latest is Riteish Deshmukh and Siddharth Malhotra in the film Ek Villain.

Gabbar Singh

Literature- Who can forget Lord Voldemort in Harry Potter, Cruella De Vil in 101 Dalmatians, Jafar in Aladdin, The Queen in Snow white, Damon in Vampire Diaries or Shylock in the Merchant Of Venice?!

He Who Must Not Be Named (Voldemort)
When you think of them, in a jiffy you say that these were the ‘bad’ or ‘mean’ people of all times..
We all love to hate them!
What is it that makes these villains or any of the others, remembered and mentioned for years to come?
Why is it that every story has a villain?
In simple words, every story has a villain because it ‘needs’ one! The more cruel the bad guy the better hero can appear.
In fact there are times when in the movies or fictional novels the bad guy is much more appealing than the hero, at least I’ve felt it so.
Why? Because the ‘bad’ guy appears to be charming, charismatic, smooth, confident, fearless and intelligent. He has a layer of complexity and something about him is intriguing! He an invisible magnet in him that pulls us whether we realise it or not.
So one part of us always is with the good, the morally right and the righteous hero while the other part of us secretly admires the villain for reasons we don’t understand.
Its always thrilling to watch the good win over the bad only if the ‘bad’ fights back to its best and throws challenges in front of the good.
Forget movies or stories, even in a normal sports game, the real sense of excitement comes only if both the teams play in almost equal competitive spirit and one of them wins over the other just by a small margin, that match is much more exciting one than an obvious one when you know who’s going to take the cake away.
The point here is, major challenges are present in our lives only to bring out the best in us. I had read a friend’s status ‘Every single time that you are challenged, remember God wants you to come out as a Hero’
So the joy of the victory is always heightened by the strength of the obstacle or the ‘villain’
Each one of us has a darker side in us too, whether we acknowledge it or not. At some point of time we all have fought with the darker side within us and the good within us has triumphed. A constant play of the good versus the bad goes on all over, everywhere in the world at all times.
As they say, the world is not divided into white and black, there are shades of grey too! So Nothing can be labelled as right or wrong, correct or incorrect. What may be right for a person, may be wrong for the other.
As Albus Dumbledore says ” It is our choices, and not out abilities that determine who we are”

Hence, those who are termed as “bad” have many good abilities and characteristics, but it is their “choice” which makes them “negative” or “evil”

Let the dark get darker, don’t be vexed, let it get more murkier and uglier, because after a point it can’t get more worse or murkier because eventually after a point, it becomes lighter, clearer and beautiful- After every night, the day eventually follows! There is no other option!

” The shining sun is hot fire
the moon has dark spots too,
                                the bright looks the brightest
                                Only if
The dark is at its darkest
Take not the world at the face it displays
Because there’s always an other side
                                 which it conceals ”

So learn from the passion and strength of the dark while always sticking upto your original, true, good self.
Yes, there are negative people out there, from sadistic killers to murderers to terrorists, but if they weren’t there, we would have never understood the tremendous significance of things like friendship, compassion, love, morals and the absolute joy of giving and helping.

Like I said earlier, the good always triumphs over the bad. it may be sooner or later, today or tomorrow, but it always will.  It’s just that the real sense of victory over the evil can only be felt if the evil is at its best! Like’em or hate’em you just can’t ignore them!

  1. The villains truly do make the story, and in most movies the good guy wins, to bad this is not so for real life, unfortunately most of the rich and powerful people I know in real life all stepped on others to get there.

  2. yeah powerful and rich people may step on others, but they aren't successful in the true sense. Ultimately when we die its not our richness in money that matters, but the richness in behaviour that counts 🙂 so from that perspective, the good always wins 🙂

Your thoughts please?
